About Shelby Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA)

SMHA is the public housing authority for Shelby County, Ohio. Our mission is to serve the community by helping people access affordable housing. By working with our collaborative partners, we develop, renovate and maintain housing, promote neighborhood revitalization, and assist residents in accessing needed social services. To accomplish this, LMHA will operate in an efficient manner, within HUD guidelines and through partnerships with the community. SMHA will operate with a high degree of organizational effectiveness in order to remain financially viable.

SMHA has housing opportunities for qualified families, singles and seniors. Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities throughout Shelby County. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs) that manage the housing for residents at rents they can afford. HUD furnishes technical and professional assistance in planning, developing and managing these developments.

Enhancing Neighborhoods, Strengthening Communities, Changing Lives Shelby Metropolitan Housing Authority provides quality, affordable housing with an array of amenities such as energy-efficient properties and accessible units as well as using environmentally friendly construction to residents of Shelby County. More importantly, they provide these households a stable living environment so that they may live securely and work towards their own economic self-sufficiency. Besides providing quality, affordable housing, SMHA offers supportive services through partnerships with the community.
Each year Shelby Metropolitan Housing Authority is funded through the Federal budget, receiving over $1,196,555. to operate our programs. SMHA currently has 175 Scattered Public Housing Units and 189 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers dedicated to our agency. A voucher represents a family which is receiving rental assistance. The voucher goes with the family, and they can choose where they would like to live. The agency currently has a staff of seven employees.
